Comments:

Peter M. Sawchuk was born on 1918. He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on March 3, 1941, in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a structural and ornamental metal worker and also as Single, without dependents. He served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot in the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. On July 24, 1944, he was killed in action at the helm of the P -51C (42-103334) WR "Martin's Gloria", shot down during the strafing of the Lechfield aerodrome. His Mustang crashed a few kilometers from the airfield. Peter was declared "Missing In Action" when his P-51 did not return to base after a mission over Germany during the war.

Note: Originally he was buried in the village-cemetery at Untermeitingen (at the airdrome), after the war his remains were exhumed and taken to Lorraine St. Avold American Cemetery. The documents identifying Peter M. Sawchuk were lost during the transportation of his coffin to France so he is buried there as "Unknown". In the death register of Untermeitingen can be found the exact name and service-number, but mistakenly entered as "Canadian".
